From AI-generated design and code at LinkedIn to AI-powered meeting bots deployed by executives at Otter.ai, Generative AI (GenAI) is becoming a frontline force in shaping how we define, perform, and lead work.
This installment explores how GenAI is shifting job roles, workflows, and leadership presence across industries and why intentional GenAI governance is essential to maintaining trust, human agency, and mission alignment.
We’ll apply the Seba GenAI Ethics & Governance Framework to workplace transformation, spotlighting real-world use cases in healthcare, higher education, and finance. The goal is to help leaders navigate GenAI integration with strategic clarity and ethical foresight.
GenAI at Work: Blurring Roles, Reshaping Teams
Engineers now use GenAI to design at LinkedIn, and designers use GenAI to code. This “fusion” model is becoming the new norm. AI assistants write meeting notes, draft first-draft code, summarize research, and answer internal queries instantly.
As AI begins to perform alongside people, roles and teams are shifting. Organizational charts are flattening, skillsets are blending, and decision-making is accelerating.
But this acceleration creates risk:
- Who is responsible when GenAI outputs are wrong or biased?
- How do we preserve critical thinking and domain expertise?
- Can leaders prevent the erosion of human judgment over time?
Organizations must embed human-in-the-loop safeguards and document how GenAI is deployed, monitored, and governed—especially in workflows tied to accountability, compliance, or public trust.
Leadership and AI Avatars: Delegating Presence, Preserving Trust
Otter.ai’s CEO has created a “Sam-bot” that joins meetings on his behalf. It can share talking points and process decisions based on years of recorded interactions.
This may seem efficient—but what happens to trust, empathy, and nuance?
Leadership is not just about information exchange. It’s about presence, culture, and ethics. While AI can amplify reach, it cannot replace human context.
Leaders must define:
- What GenAI can represent
- What requires human presence
- How transparency and oversight are maintained
If AI fails, leaders still own the consequences. Ethical governance requires anticipating those risks.
Industry Snapshots
Healthcare
GenAI is streamlining clinical documentation, triage, and diagnostics. Epic reports that two-thirds of providers are now using its GenAI features.
However, risks remain: misdiagnosis, privacy breaches, and overreliance. Clinicians must review and own AI-generated summaries. Governance should include HIPAA-compliant protocols, bias monitoring, and transparent patient communication.
Higher Education
Over 80% of students use GenAI for research, writing, or tutoring (Rispens, 2023). Educators respond with policy shifts, focusing on AI literacy and academic integrity.
Institutions must ensure ethical GenAI use promotes critical thinking—not shortcuts. This includes:
- Promoting disclosure
- Training on AI limitations
- Redefining honor codes to include AI transparency
Financial Services
Bridgewater’s $2B AI-driven investment fund shows GenAI’s growing role in finance. Banks are deploying GenAI for market analysis, compliance, and client support.
However, transparency, explainability, and regulatory alignment (SEC, CFPB) are essential. Firms must build audit trails, model validation protocols, and ethical boundaries around GenAI-powered decision-making.
Ethics and Governance: Toward a Human-Centered Workplace
The workplace revolution is not just technological—it’s cultural.
GenAI offers incredible potential. But without governance, we risk dependency, skill erosion, and trust decay. The Seba GenAI Ethics & Governance Framework outlines principles to guide ethical integration, including:
